If there's any marriage made in heaven, it had to be the Sony Ericsson marriage. A business joint venture between two giants in the consumer electronics and telecommunications industries augured well for a company with an eye to making great mobile phones and dislodging the world's largest mobile phone makers Nokia and Motorola at that time.
Yes, these two were then battling it out for supremacy ever since mobile phones made market inroads to become an indispensable component of modern living towards the end of the 20th century.
Well, we know what happened. Between 2001 and 2009, Nokia has remained firmly the number one and Motorola has shot itself in the foot and lost track to end up at the tail end of the Big Five. SE is a bit better, landing in the fourth after South Korean mavericks Samsung and LG overtook it in a juggernaut of affordable and innovative handsets in the last 3 years. 2010 is the year Motorola and SE battles it out for the 4rth position with Motorola aiming to regain its lost glory and SE on the road to recovery after a disastrous 2009 performance.

The early years of the Sony and Ericsson merger from 2002 to 2005 saw the company at the cutting edge of mobile phone technology that re-positioned the product in the minds of the consumer. It is no longer a bland boring mobile gadget that was plain useless outside of being a communications tool on the road.
Apart from coming out with the world's first high color depth display at 256k colors with the T68i, it came out with the landmark setting P800, considered the world's first smartphone with the largest 2.9-inch TFT touchscreen at that time sporting a VGA camera.
It also stole the remaining thunder out of PDA handsets by adding this feature as another edge to its Symbian UIQ platform. Not only that, the P800 segmented the market to cater to the more upscale end. With its successors in the P900/P910 carrying the upscale features even higher with absolute marketing success, Sony Ericsson cemented its image as a maker of high end smartphones and redefined the mobile phone as a versatile mobile gadget that now opened the road to what it will eventually become.
And what it became thereafter can be traced to the W line of phones that inherited the Sony Walkman legacy of fine music playback devices on the road. The Walkman brand may have abnegated its position as the preferred mobile player during the days of cassettes to the Apple iPod MP3 players, but the mobile phones resurrected this leadership and repositioned the mobile phone as an MP3 player as well.
Then came the K line of phones carrying the Sony Cybershot digital cameras. And like its Walkman mp3 players, the camera phone was born. Nokia and Motorola can only come up to speed after 6 months to a year with entertainment and camera phones of their own. But they were copycats as far as the market was concerned. It was SE who led the way. And as they say, the rest is now history.
