Thoughts on the Sony CyberShot DSCW150
It's a known fact that budget point-and-shoot cameras lack some of the basic functionality a professional would look after. Sony CyberShot DSCW150 is meant for a non-technical person, someone for whom auto modes are more than enough. Last month I needed a camera for my grandmother's 70th anniversary. I needed something within a rather tight budget and also simple, that she can use without much hassle. After reading a couple of reviews I decided to go for this Sony model, and I know I don't regret it!
For a low end camera, Sony CyberShot DSCW150 has quite a wide variety of functionalities, some of which I have only encountered on DSLR's. I was surprised to find features like live histogram (I know several prosumer cameras that don't have it!), bracketing and manual focusing.
Sony CyberShot DSCW150 comes with a 5x optical zoom, quite satisfactory for any non professional photographer. The image stabilizing chip does its job perfectly, I managed to take some good quality pictures at low ISO and without a flash.
Thoughts on the Sony CyberShot DSCW150Speaking of flash, it comes in three modes: close-up, for shooting insects or detailed images of flowers in your garden, normal and flash+, for remote objects.
The colors are bright and saturated in auto mode, which, again, came as a surprise. I know I had to tweak my Nikon DSLR a bit to produce the balances I wanted, and this camera worked properly right out of the box.
The live histogram is particularly useful for adjusting exposure in extreme sunlight. I have it on my Nikon DSLR and I know I couldn't live without it.
Getting to the downsides, it shoots in auto mode at ISO 400 and the pictures are a bit noisy. Granted, you can fix it in Photoshop in no time, but, as I said, the camera was meant for my grandmother. Enough said!
Producers advertise that flash works in normal mode at 4 meters. I would go for way less to produce decent images. Flash is heavily underpowered, I hope Sony will take care of this in the future models.
If you are taking pictures for your blog, Facebook profile or simply email to your friends, this camera is the right one for you. For higher quality shots, you will have to use post-processing.
I hope this review will help you choose the best camera for your needs. Keep in mind, however, that these are my personal thoughts, I am a professional photographer and I sometimes tend to be picky on the models I choose.
