The introduction of ever increasing powerful camera lenses on mobile phones are meaning that people are finally leaving there standalone digital cameras at home, in favour of using just their mobile phones. But is the quality there yet? Or do the phones have a little way to go before they can be dubbed a true replacement for the digital camera?

The Sony Ericsson K850i was a breakthrough in terms of camera quality on a mobile phone. It has a 5.1 megapixel camera, equipped with a cybershot lens and flash. This is a flash that is found on digital camera's and not just an LED flash as found on lesser quality models. In the daytime the Sony Ericsson K850i takes brilliant shots. Without zoom it would be difficult to tell the difference between a picture taken from a digital camera and that of the k850i.

The problems come when you try and zoom in on an image. With the exception of the Samsung g800, no mobile phone has optical zoom and this can really make the quality fall down when trying to capture images that are far away. The optimum range for taking photographs with the Sony Ericsson K850i is about 10 - 15 metres away.

Another area that the Sony Ericsson K850i falls down is in light detection. When taking a photograph in dim and dark conditions, the mobile phone often struggles to use the embedded light filters, meaning photographs are dimmer than they should be. To counter this, make sure you hold the button down for a 5 second period or longer to ensure the sensors have enough time to adjust.

Overall the Sony Ericsson K850i's camera is not quite there in terms of a replacement device for the traditional digital camera, but if you are after something that you can capture the odd shot of friends, then this phone will definitely suffice in this media crazy world.
